Inspiration for this particular colourful mural came from the stained glass windows housed inside the building above the gate which was once the Ship Hotel. Dating back to the 18th century, the Ship Hotel was a busy hub for travellers visiting Skipton but unfortunately was closed in 1924 and converted into shops and flats.

The colours for the mural were taken from the pinks, reds and blues displayed in the stained glass windows as well as paying homage to the textiles of the day. From Skipton Civic Society: by the later 19th century wealthier women’s and men’s clothes were often brightly coloured, due to the advances in technology around dyeing and finishing, something well known to the town’s cotton mill owners. So the gorgeous colours also pick up the late Victorian character relating to the town’s growth and increasing middle class affluence.
